Below is a great post on material that entry or entrance mats are made from. What makes a good walk off mat? A lot has to do with the material its made from. When looking at an carpet entrance mats or carpet runners for commercial use or home – residential use, keep in mind what is the backing made from also. Rubber backing will last longer and hold up better than the plastic or vinyl backing. We have only seen one company (the Andersen Company)  that offers different backings, one for laying the entrance matting over carpet and one over hard floors. The hard floors backing would be smooth and with rubber it will hold nicely. Over carpeting the entry mats would have a cleated backing, this will end any floating or movement the mat might have.

Whats the difference in entry mats or entrance matting?

NYLON
Nylon is utilized in approximately 65% of the carpet sold in the U.S. It is a very durable fiber with excellent performance characteristics. Its strengths include good resiliency, good yarn memory to hold twist, good carpet cleaning efficacy, good stain resistance with stain treatment applied, good soil hiding ability, and good abrasion resistance. Nylon is manufactured in both BCF and staple fiber. It is the strongest fiber, making it an excellent choice for the heavy traffic of an active household or commercial facility. It’s also the most durable of the synthetics. It is soil and mildew resistant and resilient, but is prone to static. Most nylon is treated with an anti-static treatment to reduce static. Continuous filament fibers minimize pilling and shedding.

OLEFIN
Olefin makes up about 30 % of the fiber used in U.S. carpet manufacturing today. Its strengths include superior stain resistance, with the exception of oil-based stains, and low cost. It is a solution-dyed product, which means color is added during extrusion in its molten state rather than topically applied. (Imagine a carrot vs. a radish). Because of this dye method it has superior resistance to bleaches and sunlight fading. However it has poor resiliency, which can lead to crushing. Color selection is limited due to its dye method. It has poor abrasion resistance and its low melt point can cause fibers to fuse if furniture or other objects are dragged across its surface.

NYLON
This is the most commonly used fiber in carpet today because it is strong, easy to dye, and readily available. There is still no stronger carpet fiber on the market today. If you have any traffic paths at all, I strongly recommend you buy a nylon carpet and forget about those other fibers.

Polypropylene or Olefin:
This is one of the most color fast fibers on the market. It also is one of the most naturally stain resistant. Thus, this fiber is best suited for indoor-outdoor carpet in both loop and grass styles. Olefin is a cheap fiber. It performs well in wear tests if the profile of the pile height is super low. If one adds air to the fiber to give it some bulk (so it feels good), it will not produce a carpet that looks good for longer than six months. This puffed up Olefin will crush!

what about Polyester?

POLYESTER:
This is a new type of fiber that has this long chemical name: Polyethylene Terephthalate, but still falls in the class of fibers known commonly as polyesters. ThisPolyester fiber,however,is “not your daddy’s polyester”. This fiber has natural and permanent stain resistance. Polyester fiber is stronger than the old polyester and has betterabrasion resistance. Unlike the old polyester, thePolyester product has ahighermelting point and is more resistant to abrasion.

The fiber is made from PET chips,some of which come from recycledplastic containers, hence the name “pop bottle carpet”. Recycling doesnot affect the quality if the fiber, thus this product could be a futurefiber that could be recycled over and over.click here

Like olefin, Polyester does have poor resilient properties and thus issusceptibleto crushing. Polyester fabrics are generally sold in heavy faceweights withhigh-density construction. Avoid high pile heights with low-densityconstruction.These products tend to flatten and “ugly” out. Also look for hightwist levelsrather than “blown” yarns. Loose twists (blown yarn) tend to untwistand theyarn tips tend to fuse together creating a matted appearance. click here

What is Nitrile rubber?

Nitrile Rubber is not a natural product, it is a synthetic rubber polymer. Nitrile Rubber is generally resistant to animal fats, oils, fuel and other chemicals. It is used in the automotive industry as fuel hoses, oil handling hoses, grommets and seals. This stuff has to be tough! It can with stand temperatures of -40 to +108 celcious. A large use for Nitrile material is the use in the manufacturing of gloves (they can be nine times more puncture resistant with Nitrile). Floor mats and matting is another use (anti fatigue mats, kitchen matting, and in industrial areas with oil and grease). Nitrile rubber is more resistant than the natural rubber.

Are all Kitchen floor mats the same?

No, the more Nitrile in the product the more it will stand up to all the grease and oils.

Be very careful when you read about any kitchen mat, some will state grease resistant, this only means that they will resist the grease. Some will go as far to say their mats are grease proof, this can be better than resistant, however it does not mean its grease proof. Again, be careful what is claimed in the advertising. Make sure you know what the Nitrile count really is, this is the only way to really know how much Nitrile is in the mat. The more Nitrile, the better it will handle grease and animal fats.

I found a great new kitchen matting! Not only is it 100% Nitrile, it is thinner for more flexibility and has great traction or anti slip. The slip resistance not only comes from the material that it is made from but also from the design. This mat called the Safe Flow Plus has both 100 percent Nitrile rubber but also a great design, its soft yet tough. Soft for comfort as well as for safe traction and the toughness of Nitrile to last and stand up to chemicals. It also comes with drainage holes, this can be very important not only in use on the floor, but also in keeping the surface clear for safe and sure traction. These openings also assist in cleaning and allowing debris and liquids to flow away.

I had a customer who was really satisfied with his kitchen floor matting that lasted about 6 months, this did not seem like a long enough time frame for floor matting to last. I was chatting with a customer and what seemed like a complaint turned into something quite different.

This customer had bought a dark colored Waterhog entrance mat manufactured by The Andersen company. They are 100% guaranteed so I never have to worry.
This mat was a darker color, the darker the color the more it will show the dirt. My customer explained that as he was vacuuming the mat he thought about how there was a lot to vacuum up. Of course this is a negative right, more stuff equals more work. But it’s all in how you look at it.

All of a sudden it hit him, all this stuff he was cleaning out of the mat was not tracked all over the building!

There are literally thousands of different tile patterns, I’m just going to go over one that came about in a very interesting way.

I had a customer looking to order some Deck Tile from us, not for there garage floor, but for their deck. The Deck Tile has small openings that  allow liquids to drain away. It can be installed right over your old patio cement. These tiles snap together in such a way that allow them to be laid over uneven surfaces also.  And nice on the bare feet.

She was looking for even amounts of  two colors, and was going to create a pattern.

The pattern was going to be a “ever other” pattern as seen below in this garage floor mat picture. She had white patio furniture to set on the deck so the color white and tan really went together nicely. This pattern would look nice on a garage floor or even a kitchen floor, but skip down past this pattern and see what we came up with.

The pattern in the workout picture below was ultimately the pattern she went with, a larger color pattern.
We took into consideration the white patio furniture, the size of the deck and the fact she wanted a calm serene area. I have to confess that there were only a limited amount of white tiles in stock (please know white is a hard color to get in these tiles, for some reason they are just not popular). So the pattern we suggested to her was this “less busy” approach. The fewer white tiles tie in well with the white furniture without being overwhelming. What is the size of a two car garage?
This was a question on of my customers asked, I thought I would post my findings in hopes that others would be helped.

After a Google search, I found that the most common sizes for a two car garage are:

20’x20′
22’x24′
24’x24′

Then I took a look some of our G-Floors (just some of the mats we have), I came up with the following sizes.

Some of the larger sizes of the G Floor rolls:
8 x 22
9 x 22
10 x 22
10 x 24

The above mats are meant to be one side of a garage floor, so if you put two mats together they would cover a garage that is:

(8 x 22 multiplied by 2) = a 16 x 22 garage floor area covered
(9 x 22 multiplied by 2) = a 18 x 22 garage floor area covered
(10 x 22 multiplied by 2) = a 20 x 22 garage floor area covered
(10 x 24 multiplied by 2) = a 20 x 24 garage floor area covered

So the above shows that we can add these sizes to the Google searched sizes:
16 x 22
18 x 22
20 x 22
20 x 24

Keep in mind we have mats that come in approx. 2′ x 2′ sizes with puzzle connections and 1′ x 1′ tile mats that can be pieced together to create multiple patterns and colors to create a very unique and custom floor also.

A few of the larger sized G Floors can be cut to cover more space:
-we sell a 9 x 44 mat and after cutting the mat into two mats you get two 9 x 22 s, which can then cover a garage space of 18 x 22.
-we sell a 9 x 60 mat and after cutting the mat in to two mats you get two 9 x 30 s, which can then cover a garage space of 18 x 30 or 3 mats of 9 x 20 that cover 27 x 20.

I was looking around the internet and came across a cool idea!

We carry some 12″x12″ PVC tiles that snap together and are used mostly for garage floors, Florida room or porch floors, decks, pool and spa areas, work shops, industrial and commercial uses – but wow I never thought of using them for your cat’s litter box.

People love the different looks, the ease of doing it yourself (DYI), and it actually works. They use them to catch the cat litter from the box as the cat comes out, mats or tiles simply lift and there you find all the cat litter collected in one place, not all over your room.
